Earliest meeting: Friday 24th October 1845 Final meeting: Tuesday 13th October 1846 The East Staffordshire village of Rocester, close to Uttoxeter, can trace its history back to Roman times. A Roman fort was founded near the village in 69 AD, and the Anglo-Saxons made use of the village throughout the Middle Ages. The village is recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book when known as Rowcestre. In the middle of the 19th century the village staged its own series of race meetings noted by the ‘County History of Staffordshire’ when it recorded that a two day meeting took place on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October 1845 over the Horse Meadow course. The meeting was successful and a second 2 day meeting was held the next year on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th October 1846 under the direction of Mr Edward Beresford.
